“I hate Keith Hernandez!”

Why you ask? I’ll tell you why…

June 14, 1987, Mets-Phillies.

In the Season 3 Episode 17 “The Boyfriend” we learn how both Kramer and Newman HATE KEITH Hernandez. Kramer and Newman go on to tell of how after Hernandez ruined their day due to his error opened the door to a five-run Phillies ninth. After the game Kramer tells Hernandez, “Nice game pretty boy!” A second later something happened that changed both Kramer and Newman in “a deep and profound way from that day forward.” He spit on them!

Kramer screamed out. “‘I’m hit!'”

Then the spit ricocheted off Kramer and hit Newman.

Jerry goes on to say, “Unfortunately the immutable laws of physics contradict the whole premise of your account.”

We are then treated to a reenactment of the court scene from 1991 movie JFK, which also stared Newman (Wayne Knight).

Later in the episode Kramer and Newman meet Keith in Jerry’s apartment and Keith explains that he did not spit on them.

We find out that it was indeed a “second spitter” as Roger McDowell was behind the bushes on the gravelly road.

When asked why, Kramer and Newman surmise: Kramer, “Well, maybe because we were sitting in the right field stands, cursing at him in the bullpen all game”. Newman, “He must’ve caught a glimpse of us when I poured that beer on his head”.

Why Did I choose these cards?

I have this 1987 Topps card #350 Keith Hernandez to represent the episode. Obviously I went with this particular card because of the supposed date of the game in question, June 14, 1987. This card being a 1987 card syncs up with the line. This is a card that I have had since I was a kid in the late 1980’s

Another card I have had since I was a kid is the 1987 Topps Roger McDowell #185.

This card is again a no-brainer to represent the episode as Roger is THE “Second Spitter” and matching the same year and brand of the Hernandez card just fits.
